Celiac Disease
Celiac disease destroys the mucosa of the small intestine. This reduces the absorption of dietary nutrients and can lead to atrophy of the papillas of the tongue, which may be a signs of vitamin deficiencies.
This patient has a gluten-sensitive enteropathy or celiac disease. The large recurrent ulcerations healed with scar formation. Celiac disease is not usually considered a food allergy but rather an autoimmune disease. Tissue transglutaminase has been discovered to be the autoantigen against which the abnormal immune response is directed.
