Liver Disease - Jaundice
Jaundice, also referred to as icterus, can present as yellow staining of the skin and sclerae (the whites of the eyes), and is associated with abnormally high blood levels of the bile pigment, bilirubin. Icterus in this patient was caused by cirrhosis of the liver.
There are other reasons why a tissue may appear yellow. This patient has been eating carrots daily for 25 years. Beta-carotene is known to cause this type of staining of tissues.
